Wand, rare (requires attunement by a spellcaster)

This warped-looking wand is warm to the touch and flickers faintly with unstable flames. It smells faintly of singed hair and unpredictability.

  • While holding this wand, you gain a +1 bonus to spell attack rolls.
  • The wand allows you to cast a unique version of Fire Bolt, known as Wonky Firebolt, as an action.

Wonky Firebolt

Evocation Cantrip

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 120 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

You hurl a wobbling mote of chaotic fire at a creature or object within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. Roll a d20 after declaring your target:

  • 1: The spell backfires spectacularly—the firebolt is redirected at you, the caster. Roll the attack against your own AC.
  • 2–18: The spell behaves normally. The firebolt hits the target if the attack roll succeeds, dealing damage as per Fire Bolt:
    • 1d10 fire damage (increases with level: 2d10 at 5th, 3d10 at 11th, 4d10 at 17th).
  • 19–20: A surge of volatile magic erupts from the wand. Instead of a firebolt, Fireball is cast centered on the original target (DC 15 Dex save).
    • The fireball deals 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.

This chaotic magic cannot be controlled, and you cannot choose to trigger the Fireball intentionally—it always results from a 19 or 20 on the wonky fire check, nor can you choose not to trigger the fireball if you roll a 19 or 20.
